Pakistan election: Imran Khan and Nawaz Sharif each claim advantage

General Asim Munir said that a stable hand was needed to unite "Pakistan's diverse polity", and to make "democracy functional and purposeful". The army is an important and powerful player in Pakistani politics and was widely regarded as backing Mr Nawaz. Mr Sharif's PML-N party has begun talks with other groups about forming a unity government. The final official results are yet to be announced.
